Origin
What can be said about the Euro-Atlantic Association of Belgium?
On the 21st of September 1961, as had happened in many other NATO countries, a non-governmental and non profit making organisation was born under the name of “Belgian Atlantic Association” with the aim to promote the principles, the ideas and the solidarity that lay at the core of the North Atlantic Treaty (signed in Washington DC on April 4th 1949).
In 2001, to adjust to the new political and security context prevailing in Europe now, the Association changed its denomination to the “Euro-Atlantic Association of Belgium”. The Alliance is indeed spreading its influence towards the East and out of its former area. On the other hand the European Union is also moving into the security and defence fields, that until now were covered by NATO.
At present, NATO and the European Union are obliged to cooperate and the Association gives its full support to their endeavours.
